2 May v Bristol Asians - League (Away)

Hampset 2nd XI started the new league season with a trip to Bristol Asians 2nd XI.  Hampset won the toss and elected to bowl.  After some very economical and testing bowling from James Dorey, Mark Matthews and Chris Clelland, Asians found themselves 51-4 after 20 overs. However, Asians mid and late bating order then found their eye with Sajid (24) Sohail (32) Mushi (24) and Somi (39) punishing some short pitched bowling from Hampset, helping Asians reach a respectable 195-9 at the end of their 45 overs.  Notable bowling figures for Hampset were Matthews (4-59) Clelland (2-49) and Chas Dunford (2-19).

In reply, Hampset started solidly, if not spectacularly; but two quick wickets saw Hampset 41-2 after 15 overs with Dunford making 21.  This brought Richard Hodges to the crease, and with Paul Collard the pair scored 81 runs for the 3rd wicket before Hodges was trapped LBW for 43.  The runs per over required was beginning to creep up, and Nick Lear upped the tempo scoring a quick fire 21 not out.  Collard was out in the 43rd over for 63, but by this stage the Asians total was out of reach and Hampset completed their 45 overs on 168-4.  A fine bowling performance by Mushi of 2-26 from 13 overs went a long way to securing the victory for Asians.

9 May v Bradley Stoke - League (Away)

Hampset 2nd XI travelled to Bristol for the second week in a row in the League, visiting Bradley Stoke.  Bradley Stoke won the toss and took the ball.  Hampset started strongly, with a superb 80 from 87 balls from Steve Kembery on his return to cricket after 3 years.  Steve was very well supported by the top and middle order; runs coming from Matt Ball (28) and a superb chase for runs in the closing stages from Richard Hodges (42) and Pete Bagnall (40) meant that Hampset closed their 45 overs on a commanding 234 for 6.

In reply, Bradley Stoke got off to a shaky start and were soon 22 for 3.  However, a strong knock of 68 from Jason Grail stabilised the Bradley Stoke innings and they found themselves at 158-7 from 30 overs.  A tense finish was obviously beginning to shape up; Hampset needed to get some economical and accurate overs in to slow Bradley Stoke down, however James Tovey came to the crease and made 46 from 44 balls before being caught with 2 overs remaining.

The game went into the final over with Bradley Stoke needing 3 runs to win and Hampset looking to take the final wicket.  It was Bradley Stoke who came out top, with the winning boundary coming off the second ball of the last over.  Notable Hampset bowling performances of 4-43 from Kit Pearson and 3-74 from Mark Matthews.

A great game of cricket, but a huge disappointment for Hampset to have lost a game when they had controlled it for much of its duration.  Certainly areas of the game that need to be looked at if Hampset are going to close out victories.

A disappointing outcome but a good performance in many parts of the game and Dunford is keen to see his troops make the necessary improvements, as they look to turn the tide with a home game St Mary Redcliffe this coming Saturday.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite so good news from Hampset’s other Saturday sides as both the 2nds and 3rds were defeated.

The 2nds fell to a 90 run defeat chasing 312 on the road against a Bedminster 3rd XI side, whilst the 3rds were also comprehensively beaten by Downend 3rds by 7 wickets. Hopefully as the availability and the clubs playing strength improves over coming weeks the 2nd XI will be able to post its first league win of the season and the third XI can return to winning ways.

HAMPSET 2nds GET FIRST LEAGUE WIN OF THE SEASON
Hampset 2nds played their first league game of the season at home, playing visitors Phoenix West Indians.  On a very hot day, Phoenix won the toss and put Hampset into bat.  Hampset got off to a very solid start, with Chas Dunford (42) and Matt Ball (21) seeing Hampset reach 70-2 in the 15th over.  James Wellstead then came to the crease and immediately took the game to the Phoenix bowling, scoring a quick fire 56 from 55 deliveries. Solid contributions from Richard Hodges (19), Duncan Nicholas (18) and a great cameo innings from James Parker (24 not out from 26 deliveries) meant that Hampset finished there 45 overs on a solid total of 217-7.  Notable bowling for Phoenix; Bowen (4-69) and Burnett (2-43).
In reply, Phoenix were soon in trouble, and some very penetrating and accurate bowling from James Dorey and Ben Voutt had the visitors reeling at 88-8.  However, Joseph dug-in and made Hampset work hard for the remaining 2 wickets; scoring a resilient 28 not out from 72 deliveries.  The final 2 wickets were prized out, and Phoenix were dismissed for 177 in 43.3 overs.  A fantastic opening bowling effort from Dorey (5-44) and Voutt (3-38) clinched Hampset 2nd's there first league win of the season.
A much more complete performance, which shows the potential that the team has.  However, still elements to be improved; notably extras and remaining positive throughout the 45 overs when the team is bowling.  Much for the team to be positive about for the remainder of the season.

15/8/09 - v Thornbury 3rds (League - Home)

At Bloomfield Rise, stand-in second team skipper, Collard, won the toss and decided to bat. The understrength visitors, Thornbury 3rds, were put to the sword as it became Colin Sinkins day. Colin opened the innings with Nicholas and together they took the score to 45 before the latter was caught for 13. Collard (74) then joined Sinkins and they built a match-winning partnership of 179 at a run a ball. In the flurry of late overs Hampset took their score to 279 for 6.

Sinkins was the star of the show with a career best 151 not out, which included 11 fours and 8 sixes.

The total was far too great a challenger for the visiting team, who were sitting in second place before the match as they collapsed to 103 all out in 31 overs as they crumbled under the pressure of large run chase. Ben Voutt was the pick of the bowlers as he ripped through the middle and also the Thornbury top-scorer Hall (24). Voutt ended up with 5 for 17 from 6 overs and was helped by Pegg with 2 for 23 and young Nicky Fairman on his second team debut with 2 for 12. Fairman, from the under 13 squad, continues to impress with his leg-spin bowling and has improved considerably over the year.

29/8/09 - v Chipping Sodbury 3rds (League - Home)

In the Second Team's final league game of the season, Chipping Sodbury 3rds visited Bloomfield Rise. The visitors had already been crowned as league winners and promoted from the division so the Scorpions second-string were expected a stern test. However, this proved not to be the case as Hampset completed a comprehensive 100 run victory.

Hampset lost the toss and were inserted on a damp track. Richard Wright was removed early for a duck before a score was on the board but Nick Lear (52), Dave Perryman (28) steady the ship, taking the score to 65 before the latter departed. Hodges (15) and then Nicholas with a run-a-ball 42 progressed the total before the overs were complete. The home team finished on 152-6 from their 45 overs.

The visitors struggled and never looked comfortable against the off-spin guile of Wright and the pace bowling of Dorey. Wright finished with 6 for 21, whilst Dorey, saved his most impressive bowling display to the last game of the season taking 4 for 22 from 15 overs. Chipping Sodbury were all out for 52 with none of the batsmen managing to get into double-figures.
